Presbyopia

Presbyopia is a naturally occurring condition of the eye that results in a decreased inability of the eye to focus. It is a direct result of the aging process, and as such is not considered to be a disease nor is it preventable. It is believed the condition arises from the natural loss of flexibility in the eye lens as we grow older.

Though the ability of the eye to focus decreases throughout life, presbyopia is usually first noticed between the ages of 40 - 50. The early symptoms are frequently the inability to read fine print or inability to do close up work.

The treatment for Presbyopia is usually prescription eyeglasses, bifocals, or contact lens that aid the eye in focusing on close objects. A thorough eye examination performed by your ophthalmologist is required to determine the degree of correction required. A type of refractive laser eye surgery known as monovision may be beneficial to some people in the treatment of presbyopia, however is not recommended for all. Your eyecare specialist will discuss with you any other surgical options which may be appropriate fro your conditon.
